Entrance Hymn: When Jesus Comes to be Baptized
When Jesus comes to be baptized, he leaves the hidden years behind, the years of safety and of peace, to bear the sins of humankind.
The Spirit of the Lord comes down, anoints the Christ to suffering, to preach the word, to fee the bound, and to the mourner, comfort bring.
He will not quench the dying flame, and what is bruised he will not break, but heal the wound in justice dealt, and out of death his triumph make.
O Spirit help us be like Christ; To live in love and charity, to walk in truth and justice now, and grow in Christian dignity.
We praise you, God, source of all life, we praise you, Christ, eternal Word, we praise you, Spirit, gracious gift; Your triune presence fills our world.
Offertory Hymn: Jesus to Jordan’s Waters Came
Jesus to Jordan’s waters came those waters to redeem. Under the Baptist’s guiding hand he plunged into its stream that all who come to be baptized might share his life supreme.
Rising he saw the heavens rent; Saw, falling from above, God’s spirit sailing down on him, in symbol as a dove. He heard his heavenly father’s voice: “You are the Son I love”.
Father, who claimed us in your son, keep us your children still. Spirit, who shone about the Christ, his life in us fulfill. O Christ sustain our life in you in thought and heart and will.
Communion Hymn: Behold the Lamb of God
Those who were in the dark are thankful for the sunlight; we who live, we who die are grateful for his gift, thankful for his love.
(Refrain) Behold, behold the lamb of God. All who eat, all who drink shall live; and all, all who dwell in God shall come to know his glory.
Peaceful now, those whose hearts are blessed with understanding of the wheat, of the wine united with his word and the love we share. (To Refrain)
Gentle one, Child of God, join with us at this table. Bless our lives; nourish all who hunger for this feast; shelter them with peace. (To Refrain)
Lord of all, give us light. Deliver us from evil. Make us one; be our shield. Make still the winds that blow; cradle us with love. (To Refrain)
Recessional Hymn: There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy
There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There’s a kindness in His justice, Which is more than liberty. There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; There is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the head.
For the love of God is broader, than the measure of our mind; And the heart of the Eternal, Is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more simple we should take him at his word, And our lives would be thanksgiving for the goodness of our lord.
Troubled souls, why will you scatter like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts, why will you wander from a love so true and deep? There is welcome for the sinner and more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Savior, there is healing in his blood.
